Zion Day 26

The Presentation last night at SUU went great. There were about 45 to 50 people in attendance and no one was injured so I consider it a success. I spoke for about an hour including a brief question and answer session. Since these were a lot of art students I focused a bit more on technique and materials, than I did at the Lodge in the Park.

I also talked about marketing art and getting your art out there in the public through entering competitions and joining art organizations, both of which have been very instrumental in my career path so far.

Today I had Lunch with Jock Whitworth the Park superintendent. He took me to lunch at the lodge after coming to visit the Grotto. He is a super nice guy and has a great job, right here in one of the prettiest Parks in the country. What an office.

The sunshine was abundant today with big puffy white clouds blowing through all day. I decided to seize what is probably the last opportunity to go see the Kolob Canyon region of the park. It is in the far northwest section of the park and about an hours drive from the Grotto because of those pesky little mountains.

  Kolob Canyon

It is gorgeous! It doesn’t get the press that the main canyon in Zion does but it is as equally impressive, very dramatic “fingers” of rock jutting up out of the earth, and the rock in much redder there.

Here is a sample of the 585 photos I took in about three and half hours this evening.

I cropped the truck into this one to show how big the formation is.

Sunset in Kolob Canyon, looking south.

 looking North

 Looking Northeast.

It is a great palce to see and would be an even better place to hike. They have trails up each of the "fingers" and along the river. The river trail leads to a great arch, which you can read about here. http://www.zionnational-park.com/kolob-arch.htm

I think they have photos of it also.
Tomorrow is likely to rain so I will probably start to pack things in anticipation of the journey home, I will most likely leave on Friday. I can hear Texas calling.

good to see you finally woke up. I ate some crackers and tuna and an orange waiting for you to wake up and put the letter on.
Glad you didn't oversleep. I will go read your 26 days now.

Dennis: Great job at the SUU talk. You really gave those students some good information. I posted a couple of photos from your talk on my blog. Hope you have a safe trip back to Texas.

I've been looking at Kolob Canyon on a map now for several days, hoping you would have a chance to get over to area. Figured they make a less fuss over there,(less touristy) and it would be spectacular. Looks like it is. It even looks bigger, and much more of a remote area, than what you had shown us yet. Its like Zion Park, where you have been, is like the polished, shining jewel of them all. I think I would have to do some exploring over in Kolob Canyon. Your link to there, is some good reading, and would be worth learning how to climb with ropes, correctly. Somehow before I am done here, I want to go thru that country. Late Spring, or early Summer. Have no desire for the cold. Would be nice to go out there, and disappear; for a while. Plenty of hiking to do, and, at ones own pace. A shame its going to rain tomorrow, as I'm sure there is more on your list. Any desire to float thru the Grand Canyon on a raft yet? Been on my list for years. Give me a shout when you get near a cell tower. Its nice to hear what you are seeing. What a month. Thanks for the ride Denny. Its been a blast. That picture with the truck in it, and those monsters of rock behind it. Now thats cool. Tell the park folks thanks, for letting us see it all with you. Seems sad, this is coming to an end; and your the one that actually has to do the leaving. Bummer. I am sure Miss Vivi, and Texas, will be ready for you, with open arms. Safe trip.

Kolob Canyon is gorgeous! Everything you have posted on your blog has been gorgeous! As mentioned before, it's been like a travel documentary...can't wait to visit Zion. Great cloud formations with the mountains. High five on your presentation at SUU! Zion Nat. park will miss you, however, it's time for you to make your trek back to Tejas. Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience with us. Be safe on your drive to NM and to TX.
