On the trail to Cattail Falls is this view of Amon Carter peak, the mountain on the right. It is a very open trail with very little to shield you from the blazing sun save for an occasional ambling cloud. This is the scene in this painting; although an empty sky, the shadow of a cloud drifts across the desert floor. Below the magnificent peaks lies a vast field of sotol, hundreds of the yellow-green spikes punctuated with their distinctive stalks, at differing angles to the landscape; scattered about like spears in the aftermath of a medieval battlefield.
The midday sunlight skims the west-facing cliffs, keeping them mostly in shadow, but slowly revealing their rugged faces.
Although it is not a long walk to Cattail falls, take plenty of water and wear a hat.
